Network & Information Security Security Insights: McAfee Vulnerability Manager an SC Magazine “Best Buy”
Feb 24, 2010 – By Gary Davis

McAfee Vulnerability Manager was distinguished among several competitive products with the coveted “Five-Star” and “Best Buy” rating in the February edition of SC Magazine.

In the group test, SC Magazine put ten vulnerability assessment products through roughly 50 individual criteria that were developed by SC Magazine Labs and the Center for Regional and National Security at Eastern Michigan University. The reviewer described McAfee Vulnerability Manager as, “a powerful appliance-based tool that provides vulnerability assessment, penetration testing and web application scanning along with rogue device detection and plug-in capability to LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) and Microsoft Active Directory for asset management.”

Among several others, two areas where McAfee Vulnerability Manager really shines are the number of checks and agent-less malware detection. With over 22,000 checks it eclipses competitive products, many with fewer then half of what McAfee delivers. For years thousands of organizations have been using McAfee Vulnerability Manager for agent-less malware detection. This capability assures that customers can scan for the most impactful malware within their network as part of their ongoing vulnerability assessment workflow.

Review Highlights

McAfee Vulnerability Manager received a perfect score earning five out of five stars. In justifying the “Best Buy” designation the reviewer wrote, “we find this product to be a solid value for the money. Vulnerability Manager provides many easy-to-use powerful vulnerability assessment tools in one appliance.”

Equally important is what the reviewer couldn’t find with McAfee Vulnerability Manager, which are any weaknesses. Under weaknesses in the summary it simply states, “none that we found.”

Summary findings from the review include:

- Five stars in every Category – Features, Ease of Use, Performance, Documentation, Support, and Value

- Strengths – “Vulnerability Management and Penetration Testing as well as many Compliance-Based tools.”

- Weaknesses – “None that we found.”

- Verdict – “For its comprehensive capability and ease of use, we rate this one our Best Buy.”

Courtest McAfee.
